There are few instances where a certain aircraft needs very little in the way of introduction. With the Spitfire, this is arguably one of these times. These single seater Supermarine fighter aircraft, used by the RAF extensively throughout the Battle of Britain in World War II, are often cited as playing a crucial role in ensuring Britain's victory in the conflict.

Indeed, the historical but also the emotional hold that they inspire over generations is still seen today. This however, does contrast with their scarcity; as of 2025, it is estimated that there are 204 surviving Spitfires, and only 78 of these are currently in airworthy condition.

So it goes without saying that for many people, getting a chance to fly in or alongside a Spitfire is the stuff that dreams are made of, the kind of flying experience you really can only do once-in-a-lifetime.

Where Can I Fly In A Spitfire Near Me?

The locations that are synonymous with the Spitfire are unsurprisingly, some of the best in the country to experience them up close. The former RAF station of Biggin Hill in Kent is one of the most notable, mainly because of its key role during the Battle of Britain in claiming impressive numbers of enemy aircraft.

We have a VIP tour of the Spitfire Factory based on site here, priced under £50, which is now known as the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar. Even getting to spend time up close to these planes whilst they're on static display and in a place where they were built and maintained is a priceless way of immersing yourself in its era.

There's also a number of Vintage Flight options available from Biggin Hill, including flight paths that will take you over the Beachy Head stretch of Kent coastline, Leeds Castle and the White Cliffs of Dover. Many of these were flown by fighter pilots who were trained there, so this is a very evocative experience guaranteed to stir emotions thinking of their courage and bravery.

Meanwhile, over at the revered Imperial War Museum in Duxford is the opportunity to fly in formation as a passenger alongside a Spitfire in another iconic WWII aircraft, the Harvard. Plus, as well as your flight and a commemorative photo opportunity with the Spitfire, you'll have access to the rest of IWM Duxford for the whole day.

Understandably, given their scarcity, flights in actual Spitfires are significantly more priced than many of our other flying experiences. But these fixed base simulators, based at locations from Manchester to Suffolk, closely replicate not only the aircraft itself, but also, thanks to state-of-the-art technology and hi-definition 360° screens that closely simulate the same view fighter pilots had whilst fighting the Messerschmitt, and you attempt to take on the same daring missions they did.
