About the experience
Experience the Dakota up close at North Weald Airfield in Essex! This is your chance to see a magnificent aircraft that played a significant role in military history and revolutionized commercial air travel. The DC-3 is the celebrated commercial version of the Dakota, which was the first aircraft to operate transcontinental, worldwide passenger flights. The military version was known as the C-47 ‘Skytrain.’ You will meet the living legend ‘Drag ‘em Oot,’ a 1944 C-47 Dakota that participated in D-Day operations, including the vital task of dropping paratroopers over the Normandy beaches and taking part in Operation Market Garden. Throughout your experience, you’ll learn about the fascinating and eventful history of this specific aircraft, as well as the legacy of Dakotas over the years. The second Dakota you'll encounter features a passenger configuration inside. As part of your experience, you’ll be invited to board the plane and take your seat. The pilots will then taxi along the runway at North Weald, giving you the sensation of acceleration as you near takeoff speed. These Dakota experiences are that you can invite friends and family to watch. There are fantastic viewpoints from the Scramble Hut and the paddock, which also features a lovely café for refreshments.
